On September 21, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a mass shooting occurred in Birmingham's Five Points South entertainment district, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including 26-year-old Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr. The incident took place outside the Hush Lounge on Magnolia Avenue, where multiple shooters opened fire on a crowd waiting to enter the venue. In addition to the fatalities, 17 others sustained injuries, with five reported in critical condition.
