On a Wednesday morning in May 2015, the life of 59-year-old Larry Jacobs, a male resident of Sheridan, Colorado, was tragically cut short. Jacobs was fatally shot in the head at his home on South King Street. The perpetrator was identified by investigators as his stepson, Nicholas Benhmida.
According to police, Benhmida forced his way into his parents' residence and fired the shot that killed his stepfather. Following the incident, Benhmida fled the scene.
His actions after the shooting were erratic. He reportedly went to the Canyon View Animal Hospital with his dog, where he made a disturbing request to a veterinarian for the drug used to euthanize animals, stating, 'they're going to go where I go.' He was armed at the time and, although the veterinarian technician gave him the drug, he dropped it.
Approximately two hours after the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested Benhmida in the parking lot of a Denny's restaurant near Wadsworth Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue. When he was taken into custody, police found dogs in his vehicle, all of which were unharmed.
Nicholas Benhmida was subsequently charged with murder and made his first court appearance the morning after the incident.
