On the early morning of January 28, 1987, a violent confrontation unfolded at the Northland Shopping Center in Jennings, Missouri. Officers were responding to a silent alarm that had been triggered at the Dandy Man's Store located near West Florissant Avenue and Lucas & Hunt Road. Upon arrival, a patrol sergeant discovered a smashed display window, indicating a burglary in progress.
He successfully surprised a group of intruders who were in the midst of the crime.
As the officer attempted to detain two of the suspects at the scene, the situation escalated rapidly when a third individual emerged from behind and ambushed him. A physical struggle ensued between the law enforcement official and the third suspect, during which the officer was shot in the neck. The three assailants then fled the scene, leaving the sergeant critically wounded on the ground near his patrol vehicle, which still had its engine running and headlights on. The 43-year-old White male, Kenneth John Koeller Jr., succumbed to his injuries, ending a 17-year career with the Jennings Police Department where he had served as a watch commander and helped establish the canine unit.
The investigation into the murder spanned several years before yielding significant results. Investigators eventually lifted a fingerprint from the crime scene which led them to a suspect in Ohio three years after the incident. This forensic breakthrough, along with other investigative work, resulted in the identification of multiple suspects. One individual, John White, was arrested and stood trial but was acquitted of second-degree murder charges in 1991. However, authorities found success in their pursuit of the primary shooter, identified as Lacy Turner. Turner was arrested in Illinois and subsequently confessed to the crime. He was convicted for his role in the slaying and received two life sentences for the murder of Sergeant Koeller.
