In the autumn of 2019, the life of 17-year-old Caleb Smith was tragically cut short by gunfire in St. Louis County, Missouri. A junior at Jennings High School, Caleb was found shot in an alley off Strathmore Place near West Florissant on the afternoon of October 23, 2019. The community was shaken by the violence, as residents reported hearing a barrage of gunshots that afternoon.
When the authorities arrived, Caleb was pronounced dead at the scene, the victim of a gun battle that had erupted between two groups.
The investigation into the young man's death led authorities to three suspects. The first to be apprehended was 19-year-old Deryon Thomas, who was arrested shortly after the shooting. Witnesses identified Thomas as one of the individuals who had been chasing Caleb. Further evidence emerged from a Facebook Live video that had been filmed just moments before the fatal encounter. In the video, Thomas was seen inside a stolen car, wearing the same clothing described by witnesses and holding a pistol.
As the investigation continued, two more men, 28-year-old Christopher Williams and 26-year-old Jalen Simms, were also implicated in Caleb's murder. According to the probable cause statement, Simms, Thomas, and Williams had pursued Caleb, who ran into an alley in an attempt to escape. It was there that Thomas and Williams allegedly opened fire, firing multiple shots and ending Caleb's life. The evidence against Simms and Williams included phone records that placed them at the scene of the crime and witness identifications.
All three men—Deryon Thomas, Christopher Williams, and Jalen Simms—were subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. They were each held on a $1 million cash-only bond as they awaited legal proceedings. The charges brought a measure of closure to a community grieving the senseless loss of a young life, though the case served as a stark reminder of the persistent issue of gun violence.
