40-year-old Marvin Richardson Jr. The incident, which unfolded around 1:30 p.m., also left two other men wounded.
The tranquility of the afternoon was shattered when a vehicle carrying several individuals pulled up to the home. The occupants of the car got out and unleashed a barrage of gunfire into the backyard where several people were gathered. An investigator would later describe the scene as a mass shooting, with an estimated 50 to 100 rounds fired. In the chaos that ensued, Lane and Richardson were fatally wounded. Family members of Michael Lane described him as the life of the party and a man who was simply at the "wrong place at the wrong time," an innocent victim caught in a violent act.
The Mobile Police Department launched an investigation that quickly pointed to a motive of a robbery and an ongoing dispute. Within days, two 19-year-old suspects, Santoine Johnson and Michael Stone, were taken into custody.
