In the winter of 2015, the life of a young Mobile, Alabama man was cut short in an act of violence that would lead to a years-long legal process. Timothy TJ Tyrone Taylor, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of January 14, 2015. The incident occurred in the 500 block of Helveston Street, where police responded to a report of a person shot at approximately 9:55 p.m.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Taylor deceased at the scene, having sustained a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the death of Timothy Taylor quickly pointed to a suspect, another 22-year-old from Mobile named Armani Markell Ward. Within days of the shooting, the Mobile Police Department identified Ward as the individual responsible for Taylor's death. A murder warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest. On January 20, 2015, six days after the fatal shooting, Armani Markell Ward turned himself in to the authorities. He was taken into custody and formally charged with murder, marking the beginning of the judicial proceedings in the case.
Following his arrest, the case against Armani Markell Ward moved through the Mobile County court system under the case number CC-15-5117.60. While the initial charge was murder, a later mugshot of Ward from February 2023 indicated a charge of manslaughter. This suggests that the original murder charge may have been amended as part of a plea agreement or that he was found guilty of the lesser charge at trial. The legal process continued for a number of years, culminating in an appeal filed by Ward.
The appeal, docketed as CR-2024-0717 in the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, was for post-conviction relief, a common step after a conviction has been secured. On October 31, 2025, the appellate court affirmed the lower court's decision by memorandum. A subsequent application for a rehearing by Ward's legal representation was overruled by the court on November 21, 2025, effectively upholding his conviction. The final outcome of the case, stemming from that tragic night in January 2015, resulted in Armani Markell Ward being held accountable for the death of Timothy Tyrone Taylor.
