Kevin Wade Shark, a 57-year-old Black / African American man known in his Selma, Alabama, community as a master barber and a caring mentor, was killed on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Those who knew him remembered him as a man with a "heart of gold" and "a father figure to many youth." He was considered an all-around solid guy who taught local kids how to draw and had a positive impact on everyone around him.
Around 2 p.m.
that Saturday afternoon, police were called to the 200 block of Cresthaven Court, where they found Mr. Shark inside his residence, which also served as his barbershop. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Selma Police Department, led by Interim Chief Natasha Fowlkes, immediately began an investigation into what was the city's third homicide of the year. Authorities asked for the public's help, urging anyone with information to contact either the police department or Crime Stoppers.
About a month later, investigators announced a breakthrough in the case. In June 2024, Selma Police charged 17-year-old Breon Ellis of Camden with the murder of Kevin Shark. At the time the warrant was issued, Ellis was already in custody at the Prince Arnold Detention Center, facing a separate murder charge in nearby Wilcox County.
As of June 2024, Breon Ellis was being held without bond as he awaited legal proceedings for the murder charge in Mr. Shark's death.
