On a tragic Friday evening in Selma, Alabama, a trip to Walmart turned fatal for an unsuspecting man, 40-year-old Marcus Martin. On January 31, 2025, Martin was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, sitting in his vehicle in the store's parking lot when he was caught in the crossfire of a shootout. An altercation that began inside the Walmart at 1501 AL Hwy 14 East spilled out into the parking lot, erupting in a hail of bullets.
One of those bullets tragically found and killed Martin.
The senseless act of violence that claimed Martin's life stemmed from a dispute among a group of young men. The exchange of gunfire not only resulted in Martin's death but also caused damage to multiple cars in the vicinity. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with countless bullets flying through the air. Law enforcement was immediately called to the scene, and an active investigation was launched by local, state, and federal authorities to bring those responsible to justice. Martin was remembered as a talented musician, known for playing the organ at area churches, and his death was a profound loss to the community.
In the wake of the shooting, the Selma Police Department moved swiftly, and within days, arrests were made. Four suspects, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were identified and taken into custody. Terry James Jackson Jr., 16, and Jonathan Latrell Webster, 17, were the first to be arrested. Subsequently, law enforcement sought the public's help in locating two other suspects, 19-year-old Tashun Roderick Benard Hunter and 20-year-old Willie James Hunter. All four individuals were charged with capital murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. The suspects are being held as the legal process moves forward to hold them accountable for the death of Marcus Martin.
