On the evening of March 14, 2015, 28-year-old James "Jimmy" Lafayette Hudgens IV, a resident of Demopolis, Alabama, was visiting his uncle in Selma. Around 10:15 p.m., after hearing a loud noise outside the residence, Hudgens and his uncle went to investigate. They discovered two individuals attempting to break into vehicles on the property.
