Naji O’Neal Wiggins, a 21-year-old Black man, was born in August 2002 to Melody McKeller and Kirk O’Neal Wiggins. His life was cut short in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 20, 2024, during what investigators described as an attempted robbery in Huntsville, Alabama.
Around 5:50 a.m. that day, officers with the Huntsville Police Department were called to the 3200 block of Spool Lane for a report of an unresponsive person. They arrived to find Mr.
Wiggins lying outside a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly after police arrived, a second person who had been shot during the incident, 26-year-old Chauncey Devon Smith of Selma, arrived at a local hospital in a private vehicle.
Investigators quickly determined that Smith was involved in the shooting on Spool Lane. A second suspect, 20-year-old Alazia Na’Riya Latrice Harris of Montgomery, was also identified. Police reported that after the shooting, Harris fled to Montgomery, where she later turned herself in to law enforcement. On July 31, 2024, she was transported back to Huntsville and booked into the Madison County Jail.
A capital murder warrant was issued for Chauncey Smith while he was still in the hospital receiving treatment for his gunshot wound. After his release in August 2024, he was booked into the Madison County Jail on a charge of capital murder during a robbery. A Madison County grand jury later indicted both Smith and Harris on capital murder charges, alleging they were armed while trying to take property from Mr. Wiggins.
In September 2026, Alazia Harris pleaded guilty to murder. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison and given credit for the two years she had already served in jail. As of September 2026, Chauncey Smith was still in custody and awaiting trial.
