Charlie Herbert Moore, a 61-year-old Black man, was a husband and member of the Birmingham, Alabama, community. He was born in August 1962 and is survived by his wife, Wanda Haywood Moore, along with other relatives and friends. His life was cut short in a violent encounter inside his own home in the summer of 2024.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 13, 2024, a Birmingham police officer was in the North Birmingham Homes community, located in the Fairmont and Vice Hills area,
investigating a stolen vehicle. While there, the officer heard gunshots coming from inside one of the apartments. Soon after, an armed man came out of the residence where the shots had been fired.
The officer confronted the armed suspect and fired at him, though police were unsure if the man was struck by the gunfire. The suspect then jumped into the passenger side of the stolen vehicle, which was driven by a second suspect, and the pair sped away from the scene. Officers pursued them until the car was found abandoned on Fairmont Place. When police entered the apartment, they found Charlie Moore inside. He had been shot and was unresponsive; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Over the next several months, the investigation led to the arrests of three men in connection with Mr. Moore's death. Authorities charged 27-year-old Hatarius Woods of Fairfield, Damien McDaniel, and Charles Derius Nance. Police noted that both McDaniel and Woods were also considered suspects in multiple other homicides.
According to court documents, Nance was charged with capital murder during a burglary. He was accused of providing Mr. Moore’s name and address to McDaniel and of taking part in the burglary of the home with the intent to commit murder or assault. As of December 2024, all three men were facing charges in the case.
