In the late hours of a Thursday night in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 35-year-old Diontranet Tinae Brown was tragically cut short. On September 19, 2024, the mother, known affectionately as 'Dee Dee,' was inside a bar and lounge on 9th Street North when gunfire erupted. An innocent bystander, she was struck by a bullet. Emergency services arrived to find her unresponsive on the ground.
She was rushed to UAB Hospital, but her injuries proved fatal.
Diontranet was a well-educated woman who had graduated from Wenonah High School in 2007 and went on to earn an associate's degree in Funeral Services Education, a bachelor's in Management, and a master's in Business Administration. Her greatest joy was her son, Kaleb. She was remembered for her beautiful smile and as a funny, outgoing, and loving person who worked for Alabama Power and various funeral homes. Her unexpected death left her family, including her parents and sisters, and her many friends and colleagues in a state of shock and deep sorrow.
The investigation into her death led to the arrest of 22-year-old Damien McDaniel. Authorities have charged McDaniel with the murder of Diontranet Tinae Brown. His arrest, however, unveiled a much larger and more violent story. Investigators have linked McDaniel to a significant wave of crime that plagued Birmingham during the summer of 2024.
McDaniel, along with an associate named Hatarius Woods, is accused of being connected to nearly a third of the city's homicides between July and September of that year. McDaniel faces charges in multiple other killings, including two separate mass shootings. One of these mass shootings occurred just two days after Diontranet's death. In total, authorities have publicly stated that McDaniel is tied to as many as eleven homicides in the city, with investigations into other unsolved cases, including possible murders-for-hire, still ongoing. While a suspect is in custody, the case against him is pending trial.
