November 12th had been one of spirited competition at Woodlawn High School, where Lomax had attended a basketball game. According to preliminary investigations by the Birmingham Police Department, a verbal altercation occurred as people were leaving the event. Shortly after, as Lomax and a friend were attempting to depart in their vehicle near the intersection of 54th Street and 2nd Avenue North, an unidentified individual opened fire. Multiple shots were fired into the vehicle, striking Lomax, who was seated in the passenger side. His friend, who was driving, immediately sought help.
First responders arrived at the scene around 9:50 p.m. to find Lomax unresponsive. He was quickly transported to UAB Hospital with a gunshot wound. Despite medical efforts, Gerald Andre Lomax Jr. passed away on November 13, 2024. His family was faced with the devastating decision to remove him from life support.
