On July 17, 1986, Patrol Officer Harry Biddington Hanson, Jr., a 41-year-old K-9 handler with the Anchorage Police Department, was fatally shot while pursuing a suspect who had previously fired at another officer. The incident began when the suspect shot at a fellow officer, stole her patrol car, and fled the scene. After crashing the stolen vehicle into a wall, the suspect attempted to escape on foot.
