In the early morning hours of a Saturday in October 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the Brightwood Park neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. When police responded to the scene on the 600 block of Kennedy Street NW at approximately 2:15 a.m., they discovered two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. One of the victims, Saul Flores, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man, 31-year-old Ever Cruz of Northwest Washington, was found in critical condition and rushed to MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on Sunday, October 16, 2016.
The incident was classified as a double homicide, leaving the community shaken and authorities with a complex investigation ahead.
In the wake of the fatal shootings of Ever Cruz and Saul Flores, the Metropolitan Police Department initiated an investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the perpetrators. However, in the immediate aftermath, authorities released few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting and did not provide any description of a suspect or suspects. As of late 2016, no arrests had been made in connection with the deaths of the two men, and the case remained an open and active investigation.
