On August 15, 2024, 45-year-old Michael Wells was found unresponsive near his home on Pleasant Hill Lane in Sylacauga's Odena community. Responding to reports, deputies and medics arrived to discover Wells had been fatally shot; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wells was a dedicated father, leaving behind 15 children. He was also recognized as a coach, mentor, and community leader, making his loss deeply felt across Sylacauga.
