In the quiet Odena community of Sylacauga, Alabama, the life of Michael Lionel Wells, a 45-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short on August 15, 2024. Known affectionately as 'Big Mike' or 'Mr. Like That,' Wells was a pillar of his community, recognized for his role as a dedicated father, coach, mentor, and community leader.
His sudden and violent death sent ripples of shock and grief through all who knew him.
On that Thursday, deputies and medics were dispatched to Pleasant Hill Lane after reports of an unresponsive male. Near his home, they discovered Wells, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The news of his homicide left a significant void, particularly for his fifteen children, for whom he was a protector and provider. Beyond his family, he was a beloved figure who gave his all to the students he coached on and off the court and field.
In the wake of the shooting, the Talladega County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into his death. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. To encourage those with information to come forward, Central Alabama CrimeStoppers has offered a cash reward starting at $1,000 for any details that lead to an arrest. The investigation remains active and ongoing as law enforcement continues to seek assistance from the public to bring justice for Michael Wells and his grieving family.
