On May 17, 2024, the Birmingham Police Department responded to a call at approximately 4:45 p.m. regarding a decomposed body near Vanderbilt Road and 15th Avenue North. Upon arrival, officers discovered the remains of 25-year-old Jalen Darrel Bonner of Center Point, Alabama, in a wooded area off the roadway. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office took possession of the body, and on May 20, 2024, determined that Bonner had been fatally wounded by gunfire, officially ruling the case a homicide.
