On March 18, 2024, at approximately 5:20 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1600 block of 27th Street Ensley. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Jonathan O'Dell Thomas Jr. lying unresponsive in the roadway of the 2700 block of Avenue P, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
