In the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, on the afternoon of March 18, 2024, the life of 18-year-old Jonathan O'Dell Thomas Jr. was tragically cut short. The young Black man was discovered unresponsive in the roadway of the 2700 block of Avenue P, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound. Birmingham Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene around 5:20 p.m. following a ShotSpotter alert, a system designed to detect and locate gunfire.
