On June 16, 2024, 84-year-old Erwin Ellis Curtis was struck by a vehicle while crossing the intersection of Messer Airport Highway and Georgia Road in his wheelchair. The driver fled the scene, leaving Curtis critically injured. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on July 5, 2024.
