In the early morning hours of August 19, 2021, the life of 22-year-old Justin Deon Wade, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. Responding to reports of gunfire, police discovered Wade in the 600 block of 10th Street West in the Titusville neighborhood, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The initial investigation into the shooting suggested it was a targeted attack.
Witnesses reported hearing a series of gunshots but could provide little information about the perpetrator or the motive behind the violence. In the days and months that followed, the Birmingham Police Department actively investigated the homicide, reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing potential witnesses. Devaunte Dewayne Hill, who was 21 years old at the time of the incident, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury for the murder of Justin Deon Wade. Hill was formally charged with capital murder.
Following the indictment, Devaunte Dewayne Hill was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. He was held without bond.
