In the early morning hours of June 18, 2023, a tragic car crash on U.S. Highway 280 near Hollywood Boulevard in Birmingham, Alabama, claimed the life of 19-year-old Virginia Elizabeth Davis, known to her friends and family as 'Cricket'. A promising young woman, she had just completed her first year at the University of Alabama, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.
The female victim was a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee that, according to authorities, was being driven by an intoxicated individual.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 20-year-old Gabriel Uncofer. Reports from law enforcement indicated that Uncofer was operating the vehicle at a high rate of speed, allegedly exceeding 90 miles per hour, when he lost control. The Jeep struck a guardrail and rolled over, resulting in Davis sustaining fatal injuries at the scene. Subsequent investigation revealed that Uncofer's blood alcohol content was four times the legal limit for a person his age.
Following the crash, Gabriel Uncofer was arrested and has been charged with manslaughter in connection with Virginia Davis's death. In the wake of the criminal proceedings, the family of Virginia Davis has expressed their profound grief and has publicly advocated for the charges against Uncofer to be elevated to murder. They have also initiated a civil lawsuit, naming Gabriel Uncofer, his father, and the establishment that allegedly served alcohol to the underage driver as defendants. The lawsuit accuses the bar of negligence in serving alcohol to minors. An attorney for Uncofer has stated that his client has expressed remorse and is prepared to accept the consequences of his actions.
