On September 4, 2023, at approximately 2:35 a.m., 24-year-old Markiezia Deactrius Atkins was among five individuals shot near the Aria Restaurant & Lounge in the 900 block of 5th Avenue North in Birmingham, Alabama. The victims were transported by private vehicle to UAB Hospital for treatment. Upon arrival, at least two suspects opened fire on the group, striking a hospital emergency room door and a UAB Police patrol vehicle.
