In the spring of a tragic year in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 31-year-old Ariel Jones was violently cut short. On April 18th, her body was discovered inside a vehicle, where she had been shot and the car set ablaze. The initial investigation into the brutal killing of the female victim left her family searching for answers and a community in fear.
For nearly three months, the case remained at the forefront of their minds, a painful wound that refused to heal without justice.
The breakthrough in the investigation came as detectives were looking into a separate but eerily similar case. Another woman, Jermiera Fowler, also 31, was found shot to death and her body burned on June 1st. As Birmingham police delved into Fowler's murder, they identified a suspect, 25-year-old Demarchies Mincey. Warrants for murder and abuse of a corpse were issued for Mincey in connection with Fowler's death. This crucial lead in the Fowler case would soon shed light on the murder of Ariel Jones.
While pursuing Mincey for the murder of Jermiera Fowler, investigators uncovered evidence linking him to the death of Ariel Jones two months prior. The connection led to a capital murder warrant being issued for Mincey in Jones's case. On June 22nd, U.S. Marshals apprehended him in Stonecrest, Georgia. He was taken into custody and held in the DeKalb County Jail on unrelated charges in Georgia, awaiting extradition back to Alabama to face the accusations against him in both homicides. Upon being questioned by detectives, Mincey requested legal counsel. The arrest brought a sense of relief to the families of both victims, who expressed their hope that this was a significant step toward finding closure and justice for the two young women whose lives were so tragically taken.
