In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 11, 2023, the sounds of a birthday celebration in Birmingham's Inglenook community were shattered by a barrage of gunfire. Just after 2 a.m., reports of shots fired in the 4100 block of 49th Terrace North began flooding into the city's East Precinct. When officers arrived at the scene, they found 18-year-old Montraevious DeWayne Milton unresponsive in the roadway.
Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, the young man from Pinson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a birthday party was being held at a rented Airbnb when an argument broke out, escalating into a chaotic scene where over 100 shell casings were later recovered. Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident contained to those attending the party, a gathering of individuals reportedly between the ages of 18 and 20. The scene was marked by the visible distress of a crowd of at least 50 onlookers who had gathered in the aftermath of the violence.
In the wake of the shooting, many of the party attendees are believed to have fled, leaving investigators to piece together the events that led to the tragic loss of a young life. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the death of Montraevious Milton. The Birmingham Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in their ongoing investigation. Montraevious was set to graduate later that summer and was a father to a young son. His death marked the 59th homicide in the city of Birmingham that year.
