In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 20, 2023, the life of Morris Brown Scott, a 40-year-old Black male from Birmingham, Alabama, was tragically cut short. Just after 12:20 a.m., Birmingham Police Department's North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of 32nd Place North in the Norwood Bottoms neighborhood following a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene.
Morris Brown Scott was found lying unresponsive outside an apartment, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound. Not far from him, near a sidewalk, another adult male was also found suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel from Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and pronounced Scott deceased at the location. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
According to the initial findings of the homicide investigation, both Scott and the other man were together in the area when one or more unknown individuals opened fire on them. The Birmingham Police Department is actively investigating the shooting as a homicide and has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for Scott's death. As of the immediate aftermath of the incident, no suspects had been taken into custody. The authorities have urged anyone with knowledge of the case to contact the B.P.D. Homicide Unit or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
