In the small town of Dadeville, Alabama, a celebration of life turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy. Marsiah Emuel Collins, a 19-year-old male, was one of four young people who lost their lives on Saturday, April 15, 2023, during a mass shooting at a Sweet 16 birthday party. The event, held at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio, was shattered by gunfire that erupted, leaving dozens of others injured and a community in mourning.
Marsiah, an aspiring musician from Opelika, had graduated from high school in 2020 and was looking forward to starting college in the fall after taking some time to explore his passion for music.
The chaos of that spring evening left families desperately searching for answers and a town grappling with the senseless violence that had unfolded in its midst. In the days that followed the shooting, law enforcement officials began the arduous task of piecing together the events of that night. Their investigation led them to identify and apprehend several suspects in connection with the deadly shooting.
Among those taken into custody were two teenage brothers from Tuskegee, 17-year-old Tyreese “Ty Reik” McCullough and 16-year-old Travis McCullough. A third suspect, 20-year-old Wilson LaMar Hill Jr. of Auburn, was also arrested. All three individuals were charged with four counts of reckless murder. Despite their ages, authorities announced that the teenage suspects would be tried as adults under Alabama law. As the legal process began to unfold, the community and the families of the victims, including Marsiah's, were left to navigate their profound loss while hoping for justice to be served.
