In the small town of Dadeville, Alabama, a Sweet 16 birthday party tragically turned into a scene of chaos and violence, claiming the life of 23-year-old Corbin Dahmontrey Holston and three others on April 15, 2023. Holston, a male, had not initially been at the celebration but went to the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio to check on a younger relative after hearing concerns about potential trouble.
In a selfless act, he managed to get his relative to safety before he was fatally wounded.
The gunfire erupted at approximately 10:34 p.m., leaving four dead and 32 others injured. The other victims were identified as Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell, 18, whose sister’s birthday was being celebrated; Shaunkivia Nicole “Keke” Smith, 17; and Marsiah Emmanuel “Siah” Collins, 19. Investigators later recovered 89 shell casings from at least seven different handguns at the scene.
In the days that followed, law enforcement made a series of arrests in connection with the mass shooting. Six individuals were ultimately taken into custody and charged with four counts of reckless murder. The suspects were identified as brothers Tyreese 'Ty Reik' McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16; Wilson LaMar Hill Jr., 20; Johnny Letron Brown, 20; Willie George Brown Jr., 19; and an unnamed 15-year-old. The McCullough brothers, despite their ages, were to be tried as adults.
During a court hearing, an investigator testified that the shooting may have been sparked by a DJ's speaker falling, which sounded like a gunshot. This reportedly led to several individuals revealing they had firearms just before the actual shooting began. The investigator also stated that a gun was found on Corbin Holston's chest after the shooting. Five of the six suspects admitted to firing weapons during the party. The suspects were reportedly not invited to the party and were not known to the birthday girl's family. The motive, while not officially released, is believed to have stemmed from an altercation.
