William G. Dolan, a 27-year-old Airman First Class stationed at Sampson Air Force Base, went missing on June 26, 1953, from Sodus Point, New York. That evening, around 9:30 p.m., Dolan attempted to swim across a 300-foot channel connecting Sodus Bay to Lake Ontario. Witnesses, including his sister and girlfriend, saw him struggling halfway through the swim before he disappeared beneath the water and did not resurface.
