On the evening of June 25, 2022, a young Black/African American man named Jaylan Bloxom, aged 18, was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred at approximately 7:05 p.m. in a courtyard in the 7500 block of 67th Courtway South. When Birmingham Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found Bloxom unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Initial investigations by detectives suggested that Bloxom was with another individual at the location when an argument broke out. The situation escalated tragically when the suspect produced a handgun and shot Bloxom before fleeing the scene. In the immediate aftermath, no arrests were made, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of the person responsible.
Less than two weeks later, on July 6, 2022, the Birmingham Police Department announced a significant development in the case. They had arrested 19-year-old Marcus Harper in connection with the murder of Jaylan Bloxom. Following the presentation of the case by detectives, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office issued a murder warrant for Harper. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail, with his bond set at $1,500,000. Bloxom's death was recorded as the 60th homicide investigation in Birmingham for the year 2022.
