On July 24, 1894, Deputy Sheriff Charles M. Cole of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to serve warrants on a father and son implicated in a prior murder. Accompanied by Deputy James Smith, Cole approached the suspects' residence, where both deputies were met with gunfire and killed. The warrants were related to the murder of Deputy Sheriff B. W. Pearce, who had been killed on July 15 during a strike.
