On a Tuesday morning in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a domestic dispute tragically escalated on the southbound lanes of Interstate 59/20. The life of 27-year-old Dennis Melton was cut short on February 8, 2022, in an act that was initially reported as a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. First responders arrived at the scene around 11:15 a.m. to find Melton trapped underneath the car.
He was quickly transported to DCH Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arrival.
What first appeared to be a tragic accident soon came under the scrutiny of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit. Eyewitness accounts from the scene suggested that the collision was no accident, prompting a deeper investigation into the circumstances surrounding Melton's death. Investigators learned that Melton and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Angelica Quintana, both from Demopolis, were in a relationship that had taken a violent turn.
As the investigation progressed, a grim narrative emerged. It was revealed that during an argument, Quintana had chillingly told Melton, 'If you get out of the car, I am going to watch you die.” After Melton exited the vehicle to walk along the side of the interstate, Quintana drove across three lanes of traffic to intentionally strike him from behind. According to the testimony of two truck drivers who witnessed the event, Melton was thrown onto the hood of the car before falling to the pavement, where he was then run over and dragged. Evidence of this was left on the road in the form of an orange drag mark from his safety vest.
Based on the evidence and witness statements, Angelica Quintana was arrested and charged with murder later that same day. She was taken into custody and held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $500,000 bond. In February 2025, a jury found Quintana guilty of the murder of Dennis Melton, the father of her three children. Subsequently, she was sentenced to life in prison for her actions.
