In the fading daylight of October 29, 2022, a single gunshot shattered the evening calm in the parking lot of a CVS on West Valley Avenue in Homewood, Alabama. The victim was 39-year-old Eric Steven Kaczmarek, a male resident of the area. Witnesses initially mistook the sharp crack for a car backfiring, a mundane sound in a busy commercial area. However, the grim reality became apparent when Kaczmarek stumbled out of a vehicle, clutching his neck, and collapsed, desperately seeking help.
Store employees rushed to his side, applying pressure to the wound in a frantic effort to staunch the bleeding while they awaited the arrival of emergency services. Paramedics arrived at the scene around 5:31 p.m. and transported the critically injured Kaczmarek to UAB Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries later that night, pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a suspect, Brennon Jabree Dinatale. Authorities suggested that the motive for the deadly encounter was likely rooted in drugs, noting that both Kaczmarek and Dinatale had previous histories of drug-related arrests. At the time of the shooting, Dinatale was already facing charges for drug trafficking.
Dinatale was arrested and initially charged with capital murder. As his trial was about to begin, he reached a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of murder. The plea deal resulted in a 20-year prison sentence for his role in the death of Eric Steven Kaczmarek.
