In the summer of 2021, a heartbreaking story unfolded in the Birmingham, Alabama area, touching the community of Homewood. A seven-month-old Black/African American male infant named Joshua Amazia Griffin passed away on June 26, 2021. The circumstances surrounding his death were deeply troubling to those who would learn the details later.
An investigation into the infant's death was conducted, and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office determined the cause to be a combination of
blunt-force trauma and pneumonia. Based on these findings, Joshua's death was officially classified as a homicide. This ruling suggested that the child's life was cut short due to the actions of another person.
Despite the medical examiner's conclusion that Joshua was the victim of a homicide, the case did not proceed in the way many might have expected. The District Attorney's office, which is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases, made the decision not to file any charges in connection with his death. As a result, no arrests have been made, and there are no publicly named suspects in the case. The reasons behind the decision not to prosecute have not been widely publicized, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved justice for the infant. Following his death, funeral services for Joshua were held, and he was laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum.
