In the early morning hours of November 28, 2021, the life of 30-year-old Donnika Renee Sills was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. A female victim of gun violence, Sills was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 100 block of Third Avenue North around 3:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death revealed a prelude of conflict that did not directly involve her.
A dispute that reportedly began on Snapchat escalated into a physical altercation between two other women. Following this fight, one of the women entered a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Kaylin Landon Sparks. It was at this point that Sparks, in a moment of aggression, fired a weapon. The bullet struck Donnika Sills, an innocent bystander, in the head. A second individual was also wounded in the incident but survived.
In the wake of the shooting, Kaylin Landon Sparks turned herself in to the Birmingham Police Headquarters. She was subsequently arrested and charged with capital murder. After confessing to a relative that she had 'messed up' and possibly killed someone, the case proceeded to trial. In September 2025, a Jefferson County jury convicted Sparks on the lesser charges of manslaughter and second-degree assault. Her sentencing was scheduled for November of that year, leaving a community to mourn the senseless loss of Donnika Sills, who was the mother of a young son.
