On October 18, 2021, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to multiple ShotSpotter alerts indicating gunfire at 1305 44th Street North, an apartment complex in the Kingston neighborhood. Upon arrival, they discovered 40-year-old Deonta Sewayne Pickett unresponsive in the driver's seat of a parked vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
