Martaveous Wilson, a 24-year-old male, was killed by gunfire in Birmingham, Alabama on July 21, 2007, in a summer when violence seemed to hover over the city like heat off the pavement. That day ended with police and medics converging on a house at 845 42nd Place North, where Wilson had been shot inside.
He was rushed from the scene to UAB Hospital, but the damage was already done.

Not long after, authorities identified a suspect and moved the case from shock to accusation: Charles Knight was charged with capital murder in connection with Wilson’s death.
