In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama, a young man named Josiah Bryant, aged 22, was involved in a fatal confrontation. The incident occurred on June 19, 2021, at Hatcher's Auto Transmission Center on Tuscaloosa Avenue. An employee of the auto repair shop was opening the business for the day around 7:45 a.m. when the encounter took place.
According to Birmingham police, Bryant, who was armed, entered the shop in what was described as an attempted robbery.
This led to an exchange of gunfire between him and the store associate. During the shootout, Bryant was struck. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene, but he was pronounced dead.
Investigators recovered a handgun near Bryant's body. The employee involved in the shooting remained at the location and was reported to be fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. At the time, this was recorded as the 58th homicide in Birmingham for the year 2021. It was noted by authorities that of those cases, four had been ruled as justifiable. Court records from 2018 indicated that Bryant had a previous conviction for first-degree robbery, for which he had received a lengthy sentence with a portion to be served.
