The investigation into the incident quickly pointed to a domestic dispute that had escalated with devastating consequences. A month after his wife's death, on February 27, 2021, Thomas Leon McClellan was arrested and charged with her murder. His bond was set at $150,000. The case then proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a four-day trial that began on April 17, 2023. Prosecutors from the Cullman County District Attorney's Office presented evidence to a jury, arguing that Thomas McClellan had intentionally killed his wife.
