Caridad Carol Stripe, a 30-year-old woman from Decatur, Alabama, was killed late in the morning on August 7, 2017, when violence broke out at the Courtyard Apartments on Acadia Drive Southwest. The call for help came in around 11:30 a.m., and patrol officers, firefighters, and ambulance crews rushed to the complex. They found Stripe in the parking lot with what authorities described as a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Officers tried to keep her alive until paramedics could take over, but even after she was transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital’s Parkway Campus, she was pronounced dead.
As the scene hardened into a crime investigation, Decatur Police alerted detectives from the department’s Violent Crimes Unit. In the midst of the early chaos, a description of a vehicle believed to be leaving the area went out over the radio. Detective Jodi Fuller, who was with the Family Services Unit, spotted a vehicle matching that description and stopped it at the intersection of Old Moulton Road and Moadus Road Southwest. The driver and only occupant, Latoria McGuire, was detained as investigators worked to piece together what had just happened. After detectives completed their initial investigation, McGuire was arrested on a murder charge. A Morgan County circuit judge, Jennifer Howell, set bond at $250,000, and McGuire was held in the Morgan County Jail pending bond.
Over time, more details about what was believed to have led to the shooting surfaced through court-related reporting. Testimony referenced in later coverage said the shooting grew out of an argument between the two women about a man. In June 2018, a Morgan County grand jury indicted McGuire on a murder charge connected to Stripe’s death, with court records placing the shooting at the Courtyard Apartments on August 7.
In the days after Stripe’s death, her family prepared to lay her to rest. Funeral arrangements published by a Decatur funeral home said a celebration-of-life service was planned for August 12, 2017, at Moulton Heights M.B. Church, with burial in Decatur City Cemetery.
