Calvin Lanard Alexander, a 58-year-old man from Forestdale, Alabama, died after a violent crash late on the night of December 5, 2020, along Highway 78 near Grandview Drive in Forestdale. Deputies were dispatched at about 10:02 p.m. to investigate the wreck, where authorities said a vehicle traveling south was struck by another vehicle, setting off a devastating collision. The other driver fled on foot before deputies arrived, leaving Alexander gravely injured at the scene.
He was treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital, but he did not survive. Early news reports identified him as a Forestdale resident, and his obituary later noted that he died in Birmingham and was originally from Phenix City, remembered as a University of Alabama graduate and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
What began as a fatal traffic investigation appears, in later public reporting, to have turned into a criminal case. A later compiled homicide record for the Birmingham area states that Anthony Sundale Moore was arrested in connection with Alexander’s death and charged with reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. That same record says Moore was later indicted on those charges in September 2021.
