In the spring of 2020, a young woman's life was cut tragically short on an interstate in Alabama. Twenty-year-old Octavia Nicole Johnson of Birmingham was a passenger in a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro, enjoying a Monday evening on March 9th. The vibrant life she had ahead of her was extinguished in a violent crash that authorities would later describe as the result of a high-speed race on Interstate 59 South near Fairfield.
The driver of the Camaro, Keanjra Lashai Maddox, 22, and another driver, 27-year-old Kevin Lamar King, also in a Chevrolet Camaro, were allegedly racing when the incident occurred.
As the two cars sped along the interstate, King's 1998 Camaro struck the one Maddox was driving from behind as they attempted to navigate a curve. This impact sent both vehicles careening off the roadway and down a ravine. In the chaos of the crash, Octavia, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. She sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to UAB Hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced dead within the hour. Both Maddox and King were also injured in the crash and required hospital treatment.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency launched a thorough investigation into the fatal crash. Their findings led them to pursue charges against both drivers. On May 4, 2020, troopers arrested Kevin Lamar King without incident and charged him with manslaughter. He was subsequently transported to the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, with his bond set at $30,000. Keanjra Lashai Maddox faced the same charge of manslaughter for her role in the incident that claimed Octavia's life. However, at the time of King's arrest, Maddox remained at large.
