On July 25, 2019, a tragic house fire occurred in Birmingham's Wylam neighborhood, resulting in the deaths of 4-year-old Vdarius Wade Jr. and his mother, 24-year-old Marqueshe Lajay Smith. The fire broke out early in the morning at their residence on the 4500 block of 8th Avenue. Firefighters responded promptly and discovered Vdarius deceased inside the home. Marqueshe was rescued and transported to UAB Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
