Omari Jones-Pearce, a 1-year-old Black male from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, died on June 14, 2019, after what first sounded like a drowning call at Creekwood Village Apartments on 40th Avenue. First responders were sent to the apartment around 7 a.m. after reports that a baby had been found in a bathtub. He was discovered unresponsive, taken to a local hospital, and pronounced dead there. In the first account given to police, the child had been left in the care of his mother’s boyfriend while she was at work, and the boyfriend said Omari seemed lethargic, so he put him in the bath, left the room, and came back to find him nearly underwater. He reportedly attempted CPR while waiting for paramedics, but the story began to unravel almost immediately as investigators processed the apartment and interviewed witnesses.
By the end of that same day, police had identified the boyfriend as Christopher Cornelius Pearson, then 27, and arrested him on a murder charge. Authorities said the physical evidence did not fit a simple accidental drowning narrative, and the case quickly shifted from a tragic emergency to a homicide investigation centered on the man who had been watching the child.
