In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the life of 19-year-old Versaun Leonard was tragically cut short. On June 12, 2021, officers from the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 3200 block of Willow Lane. Upon their arrival at the West End residence around 12:14 a.m., they discovered Leonard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the male victim's death was swiftly undertaken by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit. Their work quickly led to the identification of several individuals believed to be involved in the homicide. The first arrest was made late on the same day of the shooting, with 22-year-old Brengyha Edwards being taken into custody. Initially charged with capital murder, her charge was later amended to felony murder.
Over the following days and weeks, more suspects were apprehended. Justin Demond Jenkins, 21, was arrested and charged with capital murder. A third suspect, 21-year-old Quartavius Hudson, was located and taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force, also facing a charge of capital murder. The investigation continued, and in January 2024, a fourth individual, 23-year-old Quentin Hudson, surrendered to authorities after a capital murder warrant was issued for his arrest. All four suspects were booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
