On a spring evening in Pell City, Alabama, the life of 23-year-old Demario Jovohyn Sanders was cut tragically short. Known to his family and friends as 'Duke,' Demario was a man with a pure heart and a smile that could brighten anyone's day. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 8, 1995, and had been a student at both Pell City High and Lincoln High Schools. A protective and caring individual, he always put his family first and made sure to tell them 'I love you' and 'Be safe.'
The evening of April 19, 2019, took a grim turn just before 7 p.m. at the Shady Dale Mobile Home Park. A dispute, the details of which remain known only to those involved, escalated to a shocking act of violence. Demario suffered a fatal stab wound to his torso. In the immediate aftermath, he was rushed by a private vehicle to St. Vincent's Hospital St. Clair County in a desperate attempt to save his life. The severity of his injury necessitated a transfer to UAB Hospital's Trauma Center, but tragically, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The Pell City Police Department responded to the scene and the hospital simultaneously, launching an immediate and thorough investigation. Officers secured the crime scene in the 100 block of Shady Dale and began interviewing multiple witnesses. Their investigative efforts quickly led them to a suspect who had fled to a location in Talladega. The man taken into custody was identified as 28-year-old Terry Neal Caldwell of Pell City.
Investigators determined that Sanders and Caldwell were acquainted with each other and that the fatal stabbing was not a random act of violence. Based on the evidence gathered from the crime scene and witness testimonies, Terry Neal Caldwell was formally charged with the murder of Demario Jovohyn Sanders. He was taken into custody and held on a $150,000 bond, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a young man known for his silly nature, his love for music, and the joy he brought to those who knew him.
