On September 4, 2023, at approximately 2:35 a.m., Birmingham Police Department officers were dispatched to UAB Hospital following reports of multiple gunshot victims arriving by private vehicle. Among them was 24-year-old Markiezia Deactrius Atkins, who had sustained critical injuries. Despite medical efforts, Atkins was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident also claimed the life of 33-year-old Chaveda Arreaiia Willis and left three others injured.
