In the early hours of Labor Day, September 4, 2023, a night of leisure in Birmingham, Alabama, turned into a scene of tragedy and violence that claimed the life of 24-year-old Markiezia Deactrius Atkins. The incident unfolded around 2:35 a.m. outside the Aria Lounge and Restaurant located on 5th Avenue North in the Smithfield area, where gunfire erupted, shattering the peace and leaving multiple people wounded.
Atkins, along with another woman, 33-year-old Chaveda Arreaiia Willis, and
three others were struck by bullets in what authorities have described as a targeted attack. It is believed that the victims were likely innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. In a harrowing turn of events, as Atkins, Willis, and a male victim were being transported by a private vehicle to UAB Hospital for medical attention, they were targeted a second time in a drive-by shooting just outside the hospital's emergency room.
Despite the efforts to save them, both Markiezia Atkins and Chaveda Willis succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The male victim who was with them sustained life-threatening injuries, while two other female victims from the initial nightclub shooting arrived at the hospital separately with non-life-threatening injuries. The brazenness of the second shooting at the hospital entrance highlighted the shocking nature of the crime.
The Birmingham Police Department launched an investigation into the double homicide, treating it as a targeted act of violence. However, as of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Markiezia Atkins and Chaveda Willis.
