Kayla Warren, a 28-year-old Black woman, was killed in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, on the evening of Wednesday, August 21, 2024. The incident took place in the 700 block of 30th Street Southwest. Warren died from her injuries sustained in the attack. A second victim, 20-year-old Na’Bryan Adams, was also shot during the same event and died from his injuries the following day.
The Birmingham Police Department investigated the double homicide.
Their work led to a breakthrough months later. In April 2025, the department’s Special Operations Division’s Crime Reduction Team arrested two suspects. On Thursday, April 10, officers took 23-year-old Jamil Carillo-Jemison into custody in the 1900 block of Princeton Court. A second man, LaDre Todd-Green, was also arrested in connection with the case.
Following the arrests, detectives presented their case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and obtained capital murder warrants for both men on April 12, 2025. Carillo-Jemison and Todd-Green were subsequently held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. “In our ongoing efforts to address violent crime and deliver justice to the victims’ families, the Birmingham Police Department continues to work tirelessly to bring resolution to homicide cases and ensure accountability for all those involved,” the department stated in a news release.
The case against the two men concluded in June 2025. During a preliminary hearing, a judge determined that there was not enough evidence to proceed with the capital murder charges against either Carillo-Jemison or Todd-Green. The judge ordered the charges to be dropped and mandated the release of both men from jail. As of June 2025, no one is charged in the deaths of Kayla Warren and Na'Bryan Adams, and the case remains unsolved.
