O.Z. Johnson Jr., 48, a Black male, was fatally shot on the morning of September 22, 2014, on Milwaukee’s north side. He was struck around 10:15 a.m. in the 4200 block of North 25th Street, a residential stretch where neighbors later awoke to squad cars and crime-scene tape as detectives canvassed for witnesses. The next day, Milwaukee police publicly identified Johnson and confirmed the basics of the attack while appealing for information about what led to the gunfire.

Investigators said at the time that no suspects had been arrested and that the investigation remained open, offering no immediate description of an assailant or possible motive. That absence of an arrest left Johnson’s case as one of a handful of September homicides that year to move forward without a named suspect, even as detectives reviewed leads and processed evidence gathered from the block.

Johnson’s killing occurred during a month in which city officials tallied five homicide victims and reported that firearms were the predominant weapon in deadly incidents, a pattern consistent with broader trends tracked by local reviewers. While those dashboards and monthly summaries did not identify Johnson by name, they framed the landscape of violence into which his case was recorded, underscoring the community urgency around unsolved shootings at the time.
