In a heart-wrenching incident on the evening of February 21, 2023, a five-year-old Hispanic male named Elijo Eli Gonzalez died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after accidentally shooting himself. The tragedy unfolded at a home near 29th and National, prompting a swift response from the Milwaukee Fire Department, who transported the child to Children's Wisconsin hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Subsequent investigations into Elijo's death led to the arrest of two men: his 35-year-old father, Jose Manuel Gonzalez, and a 58-year-old relative, Bryan Jaensch. Both men were charged with felony neglecting a child as a party to a crime with a consequence of death. The investigation revealed that Jose Gonzalez had left two loaded firearms unsecured in his bedroom, one of which was a. 40-caliber pistol kept under his pillow. Realizing his mistake after leaving for work, he texted Jaensch, who was watching Elijo and his 11-year-old sister, to "watch my room ive got a gun in there.”
The criminal complaint detailed a sequence of events where young Elijo found the handgun. Although his older sister alerted Jaensch, who initially took the gun from the boy and placed it on a shelf, his subsequent actions were deemed insufficient. Twenty minutes later, the boy was seen with the gun again, and this time, Jaensch only yelled at him to put it away. Tragically, moments later, Elijo accidentally shot himself in the head. In October 2023, Jose Gonzalez pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by four years of extended supervision. Bryan Jaensch's case was still moving through the criminal court process at that time.
