In the early evening of May 11, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered for the family of 15-year-old Heavion Scott, a Black male from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What began as a day like any other ended in a tragedy that would leave a permanent void in the lives of his loved ones. Around 6:30 p.m., gunfire erupted near the intersection of Teutonia and Roosevelt, forever altering the course of many lives.
Heavion was with his 14-year-old sister at the time, caught in a chaotic scene that quickly turned fatal.
According to his sister's account, they were in one of several cars with other youths. As they were leaving a gas station, another vehicle approached, and an occupant opened fire on their group. In the ensuing panic, Heavion was struck by a bullet. While many of the others fled the scene, a friend drove Heavion to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Tragically, the efforts were in vain, and he succumbed to his injuries. His mother, who rushed to the hospital, was devastatingly informed that her son was gone before she had a chance to say goodbye.
In the immediate aftermath, the Milwaukee Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for Heavion's death. At the time, they stated they were searching for unknown suspects, and no immediate arrests were made.
The pain of Heavion's loss was palpable in the words of his mother, who described him as a good kid who had recently fallen in with the wrong crowd. She spoke of her efforts to steer him onto a better path and her fears that something like this might happen. His sister, who witnessed the traumatic event, expressed that the harrowing experience had opened her eyes to the fragility of life and the consequences of the choices one makes. In the years that have followed, there have been no public announcements of any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the killing of Heavion Scott.
